Christofer Johnsson - Therion

I had the privilege of testing the system on tour before it was released (even before the final version of it) and was a bit afraid if it really would work and expected to write a long list of how it didn't work properly. The list got empty because it worked perfect and totally changed the perspective for me of playing live.

If anybody else than Uli Roth would have told me about the system I would never have believed that it really would work before I saw it with my own eyes. I have quite extra ordinary needs when it comes to tunings, so when I got to know about it, I knew I would want one even before testing it. Therion have songs with tunings in C, C#, Eb, E and drop D. That means a lot of different guitars I have to bring to the shows as it is not always possible for the guitar techs to retune in between the songs. I usually bring 3 guitars + 2-3 back ups in case I break a string. With the Powertune system I could do fine with just one guitar + back-up, but since I prefer thicker strings on the lower tunings I take two. For back up one is enough, I basically never break a string in the low tunings and if I would do that, the Powertune system would make it really quick to have the back up guitar tuned to what ever I need. So instead of 5 or 6 guitars I can go with 3, which makes quite a different today with the high prices of excess luggage when we fly between shows (a Powertune system costs around 900 euro, each guitar cost me around 200 euro when hit by overweight, so go figure how much cash I'll save on a tour with over 20 flights). Another great bonus is that I don't have to run and swap guitar every other song or plan the setlist in a way that fits how we tune the guitars. Instead of running for a new guitar all the time, the crowd get amazed by the self tuning system and I get tons of questions about it from people at each show.

I think this system will get the same impact for guitarplaying as digital recording on computers have for album recordings. Some years from now I'll be laughing about how I used to swap guitars millions of times on stage and carry around half a store of guitars on the road.

Best regards,
Christofer
